Gifts of the Spirit
It’s hard at times to stay focused on the kingdom while we live on this Earth. All around us is crime, divorce, abuse, racism, illness, and addiction. That is just naming a few. Our world is filled with chaos. Work schedules seem to get longer and longer. Even in our homes, we are overcome by chores and raising children all while trying to maintain a healthy marriage. We are drowning in the demands of the world. Our busy schedules have taken precedence over our kingdom duties. We have become so focused on what the world thinks we should be that we have lost sight of who God says we are. I think it’s time that we remind ourselves of who we are and what we have been called to do. God is waiting on us. “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few.” Matthew 9:37
You are a child of God. A citizen of heaven. Set apart. Not of this world. We are Sons and Daughters of the King. A branch of the true vine. We have been justified and redeemed. We have been joined with the Lord and are one Spirit with Him. Our identity is in and through him.
“I, therefore a prisoner of the Lord urge you to walk worthy of the calling with which you are called.” Ephesians 4:1
You are the only you in the world. There is no one like you. You are unique and you are special. You are truly one of a kind. Before the Lord formed you in your mother’s womb He knew you (Jeremiah 1:5). You were created with intention. God has plans and a purpose for your life. It is up to you, if you will allow those plans to come to fruition. No one can take your place. There is no one who can do specifically what God has ordained for you.
“There is one body and one spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling.” Ephesians 4:4
As a Christian, God has given us all at least one spiritual gift. It’s not only for our own individual benefit but for the church as well. The church being the body of Christ is to fit together just as puzzle pieces in a puzzle. Each piece is perfectly designed to connect and make the picture complete. You are a puzzle piece needed in the body of Christ. Your piece may be a mouth, some hands, some feet, some ears, some eyes. All are different yet each is needed to function properly. All must come together and connect as one. No piece or part is greater than another yet each is vitally important.
“For as we have many members in one body, but all the members do not have the same function, so we being many, or one body in Christ, and individually members of one another.” Romans 12:45
God is calling us to draw deeper in our faith and in His kingdom ministry. God sent Jesus to die so that His Holy Spirit could dwell within us. He not only wants a relationship with us but He wants to reveal His secrets and His truth to us. God has given us His Holy Spirit so that we may manifest His power! We are called to edify, comfort, heal, and bring the lost to salvation. As we come together as one we can bring our gifts together to build up the body of Christ. We should love one another as Christ loves us. When those around us look at us they should see Christ shining through us.
“Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.” 1 Corinthians 7:11
God wants to reveal His gifts so it’s important that we always pray for His guidance and wisdom so that we will understand our gift and how to apply it to our lives. As we learn our gift/gifts we need to stay humble and give God glory always. Without His Spirit we have nothing. If personal agenda comes before God’s agenda that would be abusing His gifts. We should always have a pure heart.
When we value God and his gifts he will place His glory upon us. God wants us to flourish in our gifts. We were created in His glory to manifest the gifts for His glory. He has equipped us for His purposes. There is no need to fear because He goes before us and prepares the way. He will not send us where he has not already been. Let’s use our gifts to be a gift.
“His divine power has given us everything we need for life through our knowledge of Him who called us by his own Glory and goodness.” 2 Peter 1:3
Prayer for the 7 Gifts of the Holy Spirit
O Lord Jesus Christ, Who,
before ascending into heaven,
didst promise to send the Holy Ghost
to finish Thy work in the souls
of Thy Apostles and Disciples,
deign to grant the same Holy Spirit to me,
that He may perfect in my soul
the work of Thy grace and Thy love.
Grant me the Spirit of Wisdom
that I may despise the perishable things of this world
and aspire only after the things that are eternal,
the Spirit of Understanding to enlighten my mind
with the light of Thy divine truth,
the Spirit of Counsel
that I may ever choose the surest way
of pleasing God and gaining Heaven,
the Spirit of Fortitude
that I may bear my cross with Thee,
and that I may overcome with courage
all the obstacles that oppose my salvation,
the Spirit of Piety
that I may find the service of God sweet and amiable,
the Spirit of Fear
that I may be filled with a loving reverence towards God,
and may dread in any way to displease Him.
Mark me, dear Lord,
with the sign of Thy true disciples
and animate me in all things with Thy Spirit.
